Free Battery

When I was a pre-teen I remember waiting for the Christmas catalog that had the coupon for a free battery. The Radio Shack store would give you one free battery, it depended on which one of the sales persons you got how much crap you would take. Being a kid they knew you were not going to buy a lot, or most often nothing, but we knew if we stood our ground they would give in and give you a battery.  I waited and always got my battery! My choice was always a Nine Volt Battery to run my transistor radio. The battery lasted about just less than a year so at this time the old one was always dead. So I was always waiting for a new one (oh yea I could have paid for one but that’s not as good as a free one). Some kids got a battery for their car; the other day I told my son (he’s in his forties) the only good electric car is one that runs on a free Radio Shack Battery.

After the battery coupon came in the mail the next day I would ask around who wanted to go to the Cotton Wood Mall and visit the Radio Shack for our free battery. Someone usually would go with me on Saturday; after the free movies at the Vila Theater (one time I won a bike at the free movie but that’s another story). The walk was around a mile but I guess being a pre-teen boy it took us all day for a free movie and a free battery, and maybe a coke.

I am now an older guy a few days ago I was thinking; a pre-teen and an old guy - we are kind of the same, the simple things are the most fun.
