‘It’s been a funny old week. Not funny funny – funny peculiar really.

For a while now there’s been a bird coming to my window every day. It had learned to peck at the glass to call me and I gave it bread and biscuits and stuff. A blackbird, but brown if you see what I mean, and they tell me that means it’s female. Lovely little thing she was. On Tuesday morning the big black tomcat from No 47 caught her. I saw it happen but couldn’t stop it. When I lost my little friend I cried, and I don’t mind admitting it. The next morning – Wednesday – I saw Mrs. Pardoe’s terrier chase that blooming cat on to the road and a bus ran over it. I didn’t cry then.

From my window I can see the road and that’s when I saw a dog – the same one that chased the cat – lying there. Somebody must have run over it and just left it.

That was yesterday – Thursday.

It’s Friday today and it’s the thirteenth too. I should be going out to do some bits of shopping. Somehow I don’t feel like it. I think I’ll stay in.’
